City receives perfect score on Human Rights Campaign’s Municipality Equality Index

Statement of Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarripa December 9, 2020

Earlier today we recognized a tremendous accomplishment. The City of Milwaukee received a perfect score of 100 points on the annual Municipality Equality Index released by the Human Rights Campaign. This marks the third year in a row the City has received a perfect score!

The Municipality Equality Index examines how inclusive municipal laws, policies, and services are of LGBTQ+ people who live and work there. Cities are rated based on non-discrimination laws, the municipality as an employer, municipal services, law enforcement and the city leadership’s public position on equality.

In Milwaukee, we are a leader on equality policy that includes Common Council President Cavalier Johnson‘s Conversion Therapy Ban, and the new Office of Equity and Inclusion, among other policies. I am honored to be the first out Alderperson for a city that is receiving this recognition on behalf of its commitment to our LGBTQ+ constituents.

While this achievement is reason to celebrate, it is not forgotten that there is still much work to do for Milwaukee and its people. From the continuing COVID-19 pandemic to the Black Lives Matter movement for social justice and police reform, we must continue to strive for equality for each and every Milwaukeean, and I remain committed to this goal.
