City of Milwaukee Weekly COVID-19 Update

MILWAUKEE – The disease burden in the City of Milwaukee this week decreased to 160.8 new positive COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people over seven days and remains in the “extreme transmission” category. The percentage of positive COVID-19 test results decreased to 12% and remains in the “extreme transmission” category. Additionally, based on U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines, Milwaukee County moved into the Medium COVID-19 Community Level.

Currently, 65% of city of Milwaukee adults 16 years and older are fully vaccinated, and 49.5% of fully vaccinated individuals have received a booster dose. Of children ages 5 to 11, 20.7% have completed their pediatric COVID-19 vaccine series and 24.9% have received at least one dose.

On Thursday, June 23, the Milwaukee Health Department COVID-19 sites began administration of both pediatric mRNA Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for children 6 months and older, with no appointment needed. Hours of operation and more information on the COVID-19 vaccine are available at Milwaukee.gov/covidvax. Parents and caregivers may additionally consider their primary care pediatrician, local pharmacy, or community health center to get their children vaccinated. More vaccination locations are available at vaccines.gov.

The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children 6 months through 4 years of age is a three dose series. The first and second doses are separated by three to eight weeks and the second and third doses are separated by at least eight weeks. The Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for children 6 months through 5 years of age is a two dose series, with the second dose administered four to eight weeks after the first.

Following the CDC’s guidance for those in the Medium COVID-19 Community Level, the mask advisory issued by the Milwaukee Health Department on May 20 is no longer in effect. Well-fitted masks are still strongly encouraged in public areas, especially when physical distancing is not a possibility. Everyone should stay up-to-date on their COVID-19 vaccines, including booster doses when eligible. Those who are immunocompromised or high-risk should talk to their healthcare provider about additional recommended precautions.
