Chairwoman Nicholson Statement on Milwaukee County’s Fiscal Future
A solution can be reached if we keep our eye on equity and seek common ground
MILWAUKEE – Today the Office of the Comptroller presented a five-year fiscal forecast for Milwaukee County to the Finance Committee. Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson released the following statement on the report:
“We’ve known for years that Milwaukee County is on the brink of a fiscal crisis, but today’s report by the Office of the Comptroller states plainly for all to see the scale of the problem we are facing.
“Without additional revenue our structural deficit will grow to $109 million in 2028, putting vital quality-of-life services such as transit at real risk of being reduced to a shell of what we know now.
“I—along with partners across Milwaukee County, the City of Milwaukee, and the private sector—am working diligently with my counterparts in the State Legislature to ensure the programs and amenities our neighbors rely on are funded for years to come and local government is streamlined for the betterment of our residents. Common ground is being found, and I am confident that a solution is within reach.
“We understand the dire situation Milwaukee County’s finances are currently in, and I believe that with collaboration, innovation, and equitable budgeting we can continue to provide services that make our region a world class place for people to live, work, and visit.”
