MILWAUKEE – County Board Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson has been named a “Milwaukee-area power broker” for 2021 by the Milwaukee Business Journal.

“It is an honor to be recognized amongst so many leaders making a positive impact in Milwaukee,” said Chairwoman Nicholson. “More important than any award or recognition is the work that we do day in and day out to push our community forward. I plan to continue doing everything within my power as County Board Chairwoman to uplift underserved communities and advance equity across Milwaukee.”

The Milwaukee Business Journal names a group of 100 power brokers in the Milwaukee area each year. According to the newspaper, “These are the people who others turn to when they need to get something done, whether it’s a business deal, community project or raising money for a great cause.” Chairwoman Nicholson and the other honorees will be featured in the Business Journal’s December 3 issue.

In 2021, Chairwoman Nicholson had numerous legislative achievements including committing Milwaukee County to go carbon neutral by 2050, creating paid internships at the County Board, and creating a task force to recommend funding allocations for monies received from the American Rescue Plan Act. She also made strides to advance a statewide initiative to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion across Wisconsin counties.

Chairwoman Nicholson was elected by her colleagues as Chairwoman of the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors in April 2020, for the 2020-22 term. She is the first Afro-Latina to hold that office.

In addition to leading the County Board, Chairwoman Nicholson serves as Co-Chair of the City-County Task Force on Climate and Economic Equity and on the governing boards of the Milwaukee Public Museum, Milwaukee Public Library, Milwaukee Art Museum, and Local Progress.

Chairwoman Nicholson is also the Director of Civic Engagement and Independent Political Power at the Center for Popular Democracy.
