MILWAUKEE – Named 2017’s Best Dance Company by Shepherd Express, Danceworks Performance Company welcomes founding Artistic Director Sarah Wilbur back to the city to remount Disclosure Tactics, a dance for herself and 19 intergenerational women from the Milwaukee dance community. Disclosure Tactics, a 45-minute dance theatre piece, uses viewer participation “to ask how dancing hides and reveals truths (and un-truths) about bodies.” It was originally created in Los Angeles in 2012. This opportunity to present Disclosure Tactics in Milwaukee—during Danceworks’ 25th anniversary year—is “a chance to open up and expose the multitude of meanings that the female body hides and reveals, by dancing in the loving community that supported my first decade of artistic work,” says Wilbur.

In this concert, Danceworks Performance Company will perform a new work, Pattern, Repattern, Unpattern, Repeat, based on ideas of repetition and discovery. Pattern, Repattern, Unpattern, Repeat “illustrates the ways in which Danceworks Performance Company collaborates and communicates as a group of women and was created collaboratively, with trust in the process, and in each other,” Danceworks Artistic Dirctor Dani Kuepper says. “I don’t have to have all the answers, because I know that I can rely on the women around me. We have the luxury of this atmosphere to create and evolve in.”

Panadanza Dance Company is an all women dance ensemble established in 2008 by Artistic Director Karlies Kelley, a native of the Republic of Panama. In Women Who Dance, Panadanza will explore the idea that “every woman has a breathtaking story” through its piece, Respira y Baila. Through a variety of dance styles that bring alive identities of the Caribbean, Central and South America, Panadanza “explores the perspectives of air: breath, personal and environmental reactions, formations, migrations, flow, blockage, rhythm, and song.”

The weekend will not only feature inspiring, eclectic dancing women from the Milwaukee community, but also a post-show talkback with Sarah Wilbur on Friday; a Maker Fair featuring local women-owned businesses on Saturday; guest musical performances by Cadance Collective during Friday’s performance and Earthstrong Women’s Collective in Saturday’s performance; and a pre-show Brazilian Samba lesson by Panadanza Dance Company on Sunday at 1:45pm! Visit danceworksmke.org for complete event details.
