Carthage Launches MSN Nurse Educator Program

New graduate program prepares nurses to teach healthcare professionals

KENOSHA, Wis. – Carthage College has established a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Nurse Educator program. The 15-month program is designed to prepare experienced nurses to teach, mentor, and lead in academic and clinical settings.

Set to welcome its first students in February 2027, the program responds to a growing need for qualified nurse educators, an essential factor in addressing the nationwide nursing shortage. Wisconsin’s Department of Workforce Development has estimated “a deficit of between 12,000 and 19,000 nurses by 2040 based on the demographic pressures facing the workforce.”

Students will complete the MSN coursework online with opportunities to gain hands-on experience and apply strategies to support student learning in a classroom setting. Upon completion, graduates will have both the advanced clinical knowledge and the teaching skills necessary to prepare future nurses.

“Educating the next generation of nurses is one of the most important ways we can strengthen healthcare,” said Nancy Reese, director of the Nursing Program. “This program is about more than career advancement. It’s about expanding impact — supporting future nurses while advancing the profession as a whole.”

The MSN Nurse Educator program is housed in Carthage’s newly established School of Health. It builds on the strength of Carthage’s undergraduate nursing program, which has demonstrated success over the past decade in preparing highly skilled, compassionate nurses who are prepared to meet evolving healthcare needs.

Carthage’s MSN Nurse Educator program also aligns with a unique opportunity in Wisconsin, where a $10 million state-funded initiative supports nurse educator preparation. Eligible students may receive substantial financial support, including full-tuition coverage for those who commit to teaching full time, and 50% tuition coverage for those who commit to teaching part time. Carthage nursing alumni will be eligible for an additional grant when enrolling in the MSN Nurse Educator program.

Designed for working professionals, the program allows those with established expertise in nursing care to broaden their impact by teaching the next generation of nurses.

“This program gives nurses the opportunity to answer a personal call to bring their years of healthcare experience into an academic setting,” Reese said.

Applications are being accepted for the inaugural spring 2027 cohort. For more information or to request details, visit www.carthage.edu/msn.
