Brostoff Applauds Same-Sex Marriage Ruling, Urges Continued Efforts on LGBT Issues
Jonathan Brostoff candidate for State Assembly in District 19, released the following statement.
MILWAUKEE – Jonathan Brostoff, District Director for Senate Democratic Leader Chris Larson (D-Milwaukee) and candidate for State Assembly in District 19, released the following statement on Thursday’s federal appeals court ruling regarding Wisconsin’s ban on same-sex marriage:
“I strongly applaud the U.S. appeals court’s decision that declares Wisconsin’s same-sex marriage ban to be unconstitutional. For far too long our state has prevented LGBT couples from legally expressing their love for one another, and it is time that we put an end to such discriminatory policies. I commend the efforts of the eight courageous couples who initiated the cases, as well as the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Wisconsin, and the law firm of Mayer Brown in earning this triumphant victory for Wisconsin’s LGBT couples. It is my hope that the appeals court’s decision will be maintained and that our state will no longer stand in the way of love.
“We must also remember that our LGBT community continues to face many complex challenges. I spent many years working at the homeless shelter Pathfinders and saw too many young LGBT men and women who had been kicked out of their homes and families because of their sexual orientation. We must celebrate Thursday’s victory, but continue to work together to ensure that no one can be discriminated against because of who they love.
“As Wisconsin joins the growing list of states protecting the freedom to marry, I look forward to the beginning of a new progressive era within our state. We need to work hard to elect more progressive legislators that will push forward the inclusive, accepting policies that Wisconsin needs. Let’s use the momentum from Thursday’s decision to create a truly accepting and tolerant future for all.”
