Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee (BGCGM) recently hosted its 2024 Youth of the Year announcement celebration, in partnership with Kohl’s and the Milwaukee Bucks. Loren Muwonge, a senior at Brown Deer High School was selected as the 2024 Youth of the Year representative for BGCGM and will advance to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wisconsin state competition later in the year.

2023 BGCGM Youth of the Year, Mia Moore, was chosen as the runner-up.

Muwonge has an impressive resume to her name and has already become a fixture in her community. She is a scholar for the BGCGM Graduation Plus program and a member of Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America, a program sponsored through Princeton University. Muwonge serves her community through Evolve Church and is the district 2 representative for the Milwaukee County Youth Commission where she works to promote civic engagement and racial equity among Milwaukee’s youth. She intends to study the intersection between the arts and activism and use her passion for spoken word to create messages that will directly lead to impact.

Additionally, Muwonge is a fierce advocate for youth mental health and served as a panelist at the National Governors Association and the Jed Foundation in October 2023.

“Congratulations to Loren, Mia, and all of our 2024 Youth of the Year candidates,” LaQuita Grinnage, BGCGM Leadership and Service Program Manager said. “Our candidates work extremely hard throughout this process in workshops, networking, speech writing, and other life skills, and the work doesn’t stop after the celebration. Each of our dedicated scholars continues to focus on serving their community throughout the entire year and will work together on a community service project to help educate other members about the Youth of the Year program and teaching other young leaders that will follow in their footsteps. We can’t wait to see what these scholars put together and congratulate all of them!”

The Youth of the Year Program, which empowers Club youth in high school by teaching them to lead meaningful change in themselves, others, and their communities, has been a signature leadership development program for BGCGM with a legacy of celebrating and rewarding youth’s accomplishments for more than 70 years.

It is the highest honor given to a Boys & Girls Clubs member who shows academic drive, responsibility, and a passion for giving back to the community. Candidates begin work in September with events and preparation that guide them through the process, which includes a written application, work with mentors from Kohl’s and the Bucks, and an interview with the judging panel.
