MILWAUKEE — April 29, 2026 — The Milwaukee Board of School Directors unanimously re-elected Missy Zombor as president of the Board and elected James Ferguson vice president at its annual organizational meeting on Tuesday, April 28.

Zombor, the school district’s at-large director, will serve her second term as president. During her first term as president, Zombor led the district through a challenging year that included lead stabilization in schools, the state-ordered implementation of school resource officers, and the completion of three audits to help restore the district’s financial health.

“The role of a Board member continues to grow more challenging every year, and in a district as large and complex as Milwaukee Public Schools, that responsibility is even greater,” said President Zombor. “I am honored that my Board colleagues have trusted me with this leadership through this critical time. The next year will not be easy, but MPS students are counting on us to make decisions that ensure they have the opportunities they deserve.”

Zombor was elected by the public to the Board in April 2023; her term continues through April 2027.

Director Ferguson said, “I want to thank all of my colleagues on the Board for your confidence in me, and I look forward to serving with President Zombor to move our school district forward.”

Ferguson was first elected by the public to the Board in a special election in November 2024 to fill the District 4 vacancy. District 4 includes parts of downtown, the west side, and near north side. He was re-elected in April 2025 to a four-year term.

Board members thanked the outgoing vice president, Marva Herndon, for her service in board leadership, which included the vice president role for the past year and previously included the president’s position. She will remain on the Board, representing District 1, largely on the city’s far north and northwest sides.
