Bel Canto Chorus Celebrates 10 Years of Christmas in the Basilica
Annual concert pays homage to Polish heritage & holiday favorites. December 14–16, 2018. Basilica of St. Josaphat
MILWAUKEE, WI (November 13, 2018)—Bel Canto Chorus brings its vocal power and beauty to the holiday season with its annual Christmas in the Basilica concert. The well-loved holiday concert returns for its 10th anniversary with traditional carols and beloved Christmas songs. Three performances of the concert will take place December 14–16 in the beautiful Basilica of St. Josaphat.
“For ten years, Bel Canto has been sharing the joy of Christmas with Milwaukee audiences in the glorious sanctuary of the Basilica of St. Josaphat,” notes music director Richard Hynson, who started the tradition a decade ago. He has always wanted the chorus to sing in a space with such rich history and stunning architecture as the Basilica. The Southside landmark has been a cornerstone of this concert, almost as much as the music; therefore, it seems fitting to pay tribute to the Polish history of the Basilica by singing Lulajże, Jezuniu, one of the most revered Polish Christmas carols.
Audiences can look forward to singing along with such favorites as O Come, All Ye Faithful, God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen, and Handel’s Joy to the World, accompanied by organist Kevin Bailey. The concert also features The Christmas Story, a composition by Hynson. He adds, “We have put together a delightful mix of traditional and brand-new Christmas music, lovingly prepared and presented in the splendor of the Basilica.”
