Baldwin Votes to Prevent War in Venezuela, Rein in Trump
Baldwin-backed resolution advanced with the support of Democrats and Republicans
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) released the following statement after five Senate Republicans joined all Democrats to advance a Baldwin-backed measure to prevent an all-out war in Venezuela and rein in President Trump’s ability to conduct further military action in Venezuela without sign-off from Congress. This resolution comes after months of the Trump administration unilaterally carrying out illegal strikes in the Caribbean and Pacific, an unauthorized military attack on Venezuela, and the President openly speaking about sending U.S. troops to Venezuela to “run” the country.
“Today, Democrats and Republicans came together to send a clear message to President Trump: you can’t launch our country into a war without sign-off from the American people and Congress. The American people have made clear that they want President Trump to focus on lowering their costs, not starting another forever war to enrich his big oil buddies. This President is focused on all sorts of distractions– whether it’s running Venezuela, taking over Greenland, or building his new ballroom – but he seems to have forgotten about Wisconsin families and their needs,” said Senator Baldwin. “Today, I voted to stand up for these Wisconsin families and to restore basic checks and balances on an increasingly lawless President before Americans pay the price for another war over foreign oil.”On Wednesday, Senator Baldwin delivered remarks on the Senate Floor condemning President Donald Trump’s ongoing unauthorized military conflict in Venezuela. Senator Baldwin also co-sponsors the Prohibiting Unauthorized Military Action in Venezuela Act of 2025, which would prohibit the use of federal funds for any use of military force in or against Venezuela without explicit Congressional authorization. Both this legislation and the War Powers Resolution do not prevent the United States from acting to defend itself or its citizens from an armed attack or threat of an imminent armed attack, pursue lawful counternarcotics operations, or provide humanitarian assistance to the Venezuelan people.
