Aurora Sinai Medical Center launches Post-Birth Alert Orange Bracelet Program
Intended to promote timely response and intervention for patients experiencing postpartum complications
MILWAUKEE – Aurora Health Care launched a Post-Birth Alert Orange Bracelet Program at Aurora Sinai Medical Center Tuesday to improve early recognition of postpartum complications after hospital discharge.
“Patient safety is always our top priority, and we want postpartum mothers in Milwaukee to continue to feel supported once they leave the hospital,” said Dawn Porter, Women’s Health Director of Nursing at Aurora Sinai. “Our goal with these vibrant orange bracelets is to enhance early recognition of postpartum complications, and to empower patients and their support persons to advocate for their health.”
The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) has identified four key postpartum symptoms that require emergency attention: chest pain, obstructed breathing or shortness of breath, seizures or thoughts of harm. Additionally, postpartum women are encouraged to call their health care providers if they are experiencing heavy bleeding, an incision that’s not healing, red or swollen legs, temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, or a terrible headache.
Aurora Sinai is the first hospital within Aurora Health Care to implement the Post-Alert Orange Bracelet Program, which Aurora Health Care hopes to expand over time. Postpartum patients are encouraged to wear the orange bracelets for six weeks after delivery.
