Apartment Building Fire Leaves Firefighter and Tenants Injured; Very Lucky No One was Killed

By - Feb 1st, 2026 03:46 pm

The quick and heroic actions of Milwaukee firefighters saved the lives of numerous tenants when an apartment building caught fire early this morning near N. 77th and W. Green Tree Road.

The fire broke out at about 5:30 a.m. on the first floor of the building, trapping tenants who were hanging from windows, who were then rescued by firefighters using ladders. Fire Chief Aaron Lipski reported eight people were rescued, including two infants.

Tenants did sustain injuries, and a firefighter sustained minor burn injuries while rescuing tenants, Chief Lipski said.

The building is not equipped with a sprinkler system, a potentially fatal scenario for those living in the building and in far too many similar apartment buildings and complexes across Milwaukee. I support the efforts by Chief Lipski to change state law to allow municipalities to mandate that sprinklers be installed in older apartment buildings.

We need our state legislators to get moving on this change as quickly as possible, as lives will sadly be lost the longer we wait for action.

I want to offer my sincere thanks to all of the MFD personnel and other first responders who helped save lives this morning in the 9th Aldermanic District.
