Alverno Launches New Public Health Program

Milwaukee, (April 29, 2021) – Alverno College is launching a new public health degree program in the fall, broadening its offerings in high-demand fields. The program will advance the work of Alverno’s strategic plan, which aims to support workforce development in southeastern Wisconsin and beyond.

Careers in public health have risen to the forefront due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects the field will continue to grow. “Public health officials work tirelessly to keep people healthy and safe by preventing disease and injury, and their efforts have significantly increased life expectancy in the U.S.,” said Mary Kitten, DNP, RN, CRRN, public health program director. “Because the demand for professionals who can recognize and address issues that affect community health and well-being continues to rise, we are preparing graduates who can proactively save lives and protect the health of the community.”

Public health is the practice of preventing disease, promoting good health and prolonging life within communities, with a focus on entire populations rather than on individuals, and the program builds upon Alverno’s long-established strengths in health care offerings. The field offers a wide range of career opportunities including health educators, dietitians and nutritionists, occupational health and safety professionals, researchers and public policymakers.

The public health program includes three majors: health education, health science, and policy and advocacy. Graduates of the health education track will be prepared to take the Certified Health Education Specialist exam offered by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing.
