Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs has introduced file #210767 – a resolution supporting tenant “Right to Counsel” representation for eviction proceedings in the Small Claims Court in Milwaukee County. The file will be heard during tomorrow’s Common Council meeting under matters for immediate adoption.

“With the Supreme Court’s recent decision to lift the eviction moratorium extension, we need to be doing everything possible to support residents in need, and this program is one way to ensure those facing the possibility of housing instability have proper representation,” said Alderwoman Coggs. “I want to thank all of the partners who have helped make this program a reality.”

Right to Counsel Milwaukee, created by Milwaukee County earlier this summer, will provide low-income renters with free legal representation during eviction proceedings. Twelve attorneys specializing in housing law will be part of program staff. The program is in partnership with United Way of Greater Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties and the Legal Aid Society of Milwaukee, and would support all qualifying residents who live in Milwaukee County.

Tomorrow’s Common Council meeting will begin at 9 a.m. and will be televised live on the City Channel (channel 25 on Spectrum Cable and channel 99 on AT&T U-Verse in the City of Milwaukee) and via streaming video on the city website at city.milwaukee.gov/Channel25.
