AG Kaul and Coalition File Amicus Brief in Supreme Court of the United States Opposing President Trumps Attempt to Unlawfully Deploy National Guard in Chicago
MADISON, Wis. – Attorney General Josh Kaul, as part of a coalition of attorneys general and governors, filed an amicus brief in the Supreme Court of the United States in support of Illinois and the City of Chicago against President Trump’s attempt to unlawfully, unconstitutionally, and undemocratically deploy the National Guard in Chicago. The brief urges the Court to deny the President’s request for a stay of a lower court order that blocked the deployment.
“Permitting a president to casually deploy the military in our cities—even where governors have objected—would be fundamentally inconsistent with our system of government and a striking departure from our history of respect for state sovereignty,” said AG Kaul. “The Supreme Court should permit the order blocking this deployment to stand.”Joining AG Kaul in Monday’s filing are the attorneys general of Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawai‘i, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington. The governors of Kansas, Kentucky and Pennsylvania also joined the filing.
