A Win for Milwaukee in this Economy: Council Unanimously Approves Burgelis–Brower Budget Amendment Prioritizing Lower-paid City Workers
A Win for Milwaukee in this Economy: Council unanimously approves Burgelis–Brower budget amendment prioritizing lower-paid city workers The Milwaukee Common Council today (Friday, November 6) unanimously approved, 15–0, a 2027 budget amendment authored by Alderman Peter Burgelis and Alderman Alex Brower, and cosponsored by Alderperson JoCasta Zamarripa and Alderwoman Sharlen Moore, to provide meaningful wage increases for lower-paid city employees.
Beginning in pay period 12 of 2027, the amendment provides a 1% increase for all General City Employees, plus an additional $1 per hour for all positions in pay ranges with a minimum of $25 per hour or less, and 50 cents per hour for all positions in pay ranges with a minimum between $25.01 and $30 per hour. Eligibility for the additional increases is based on the pay range’s minimum, rather than an individual employee’s current wage.
Alderman Burgelis noted the impact of this pay-increase approach. “This amendment directs more of our limited compensation dollars toward lower-paid workers while providing a general increase for everyone. I appreciate
Alderman Brower’s partnership, our cosponsors’ support, and the unanimous vote of our colleagues to provide this meaningful investment.” Alderman Brower added, “Our city depends on employees who keep our neighborhoods clean, our libraries welcoming, and essential services running. This approach provides greater equity for many employees, while ensuring all general city employees receive the additional compensation they deserve.”
