53rd Anniversary of Landmark U.S. Supreme Court Decision Establishing Right to Use Birth Control
‘We’re Not Giving Up Our Rights!’
MADISON, Wis. — Today is the 53rd anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision Griswold v. Connecticut that held married people had the right to use contraception and recognized an individual’s right to privacy in family planning matters.
The following are the statements of One Wisconsin Institute Program Director Analiese Eicher:
“Birth control lets women take charge of our own bodies and our lives. And access to birth control means more women are succeeding — graduating from college, pursuing careers and owning businesses.
“That wasn’t always the case, as we commemorate the 53rd anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision that helped establish our right to use birth control.
“Over a half century later there are still those who would turn back the clock, pushing for dangerous policies to gag health care providers and put politicians and employers in charge of decisions they have no business making for women.
“So today, our message is clear: we’re not giving up our rights!”
