Find out more »Lake Lawn Resort to salute veterans with big band tribute and dinner
Lake Lawn Resort will honor those who have served our country with a special USO-style big band tribute on Friday, Nov. 11 from 6:30 to 11 p.m. in Lake Lawn Resort’s Geneva Ballroom. Featuring a dinner and big band performance, as well as displaying WWII memorabilia and equipment, the tribute will offer an unforgettable evening for veterans to meet one another and honor their heroic service. Following the dinner, guests will hop off their seats and dance the night away with classic hits by Ladies Must Swing. Together for over 19 years, the 23-person all female band will feature high-energy performances with nostalgic big band, swing and jazz music. From saxophones, trombones, trumpets and percussion to guitars, bass, piano and vocals, Ladies Must Swing will offer nonstop entertainment for veterans and loved ones to enjoy all evening long.

International peace activist Kathy Kelly, a three-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee, will speak at a Milwaukee Armistice Day event on Friday, Nov.11, at 7 p.m. in the City Hall rotunda. The event is a reminder that Nov. 11 – now a day to honor veterans – was established as a day to promote world peace. World War I, the “war to end all wars” ended on the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Thirty million soldiers had been killed or wounded. Kathy Kelly, peace activist, pacifist and author, is co-coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonviolence in Chicago. As part of a peace team she has traveled to Iraq 26 times, remaining in combat zones during the early days of both US-Iraq wars. Her recent travel has focused on Afghanistan and Gaza, along with domestic protests against U.S. drone policy. She has been arrested in non-violent protests more than 60 times at home and abroad, and written of her experiences among targets of U.S. military bombardment and inmates of U.S. prisons. Her theme on Nov. 11 will be, "Confronting State Violence: an Armistice for our time," connecting the "war against the poor" with wars being waged and planned against people in other lands, including provocation against Russia and China. Drawing from personal experiences living alongside people in war zones and in U.S. Prisons, Kelly will discuss possibilities for peacemaking. The event is co-sponsored by Milwaukee Veterans for Peace, Peace Action Wisconsin, United Nations Association-Greater Milwaukee, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, and the Pachamama Alliance.

Join us for TWO nights of Mozart’s Requiem, one of the most famous choral works in the classical repertoire! UWM Symphony Orchestra and Combined Choirs will perform this magnificent work under the direction of Jun Kim. Featured Soloists: Alisa Jordheim, soprano Colleen Brooks, mezzo soprano David Hoffman, tenor David Dong-Geun Kim, baritone The evening’s program will also include the national premiere of “Orion”, an orchestral work by Spanish/American composer, Miguel A. Roig-Francolí. Performances at 7:30 p.m. both evenings.

St. Ann Center Indoor Market offers a fresh selection of organic produce and meats, jams, jellies and soups, handmade arts and crafts, soaps, lotions and seasonal decor, plus one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted jewelry. No admission charge! To start the season off on a healthy note, flu shots and cholesterol screenings will be available at the first indoor market, Nov. 12. Flu shots are covered by Medicare, Medicaid and Humana Insurance, and cost $20 for those without insurance. Free blood pressure checks will also be offered. The market is wheelchair accessible throughout, with plenty of nooks to sit and relax while enjoying a cup of coffee. Beverages, snacks and homemade baked goods will be sold by vendors and the St. Ann Center Marketplace Cafe.
