SHARP Literacy “A Novel Event 2016” with keynote speaker John Quiñones will take place on Monday, October 17th from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm at The Pfister Hotel. The fundraising event will support SHARP’s foundational literacy program that serves over 8,000 elementary school students in 36 of Milwaukee’s most at-risk schools. First conceived and staged in Milwaukee in 2003, Kathryn Posin’s critically-acclaimed Scheherazade is colorful, enchanting and opulent. Evoking the mysterious and exotic nature of “One Thousand and One Nights,” it will captivate audiences young and old with tales of Aladdin, Sinbad, and more.

Inspired by his life in rural Wisconsin, Charles Munch’s paintings continue to be meditations on the complex relationship between humans, animals, and nature. Munch uses bold, graphic lines and careful compositions to evoke questions and suggest possible solutions. These deceptively simple landscapes envision a world where nature’s balance is restored. Live models with “painted” muscles will help you recognize opportunities for injury prevention. Then, guided by researchers in the College of Health Sciences, learn a technique used for stress management and maintenance of well-being in all areas of life. With this simple exercise, you can regulate your mind and body to optimize health and performance.

This event is part of the Wisconsin Science Festival. In this program, the lights will be turned off so you can see live cultures of bioluminescent bacteria and single-celled organisms that glow, and learn how – and why – they do it.
