Scheherazade | Angels in the Architecture
Scheherazade’s bewitching Arabian story ignites along the Shaker-inspired purity of Angels in the Architecture. This enchanting double bill pairs sensuality and simplicity, opulence and elegance in a stirring night of entertainment. Mark Godden’s celebratory Angels in the Architecture showcases the beauty and simplicity of the Shaker movement. Set to Copland’s “Appalachian Spring Suite,” this poignant picture of the Shaker lifestyle is moving and uplifting. First conceived and staged in Milwaukee in 2003, Kathryn Posin’s critically-acclaimed Scheherazade is colorful, enchanting and opulent. Evoking the mysterious and exotic nature of “One Thousand and One Nights,” it will captivate audiences young and old with tales of Aladdin, Sinbad, and more.

Calling all ghosts and goblins to the annual Fall Family Fun Fest! Art activities indoors and out, a scavenger hunt, mini pumpkin patch and more! Dress in your favorite Halloween costume for the annual Costume Contest. Join Laura Kastelic at 3:30 pm for the NEA BIG READ book discussion about the worlds of the True Grit characters and how what they wore spoke to the nature of their character. Enter the Pumpkin Carving Contest. All pumpkins must be carved before you bring them to the museum and need to be entered by 4:00 pm. There will be a Light Up the Pumpkin Patch at 5:30 pm for all to see!

This event is part of the Wisconsin Science Festival. Dive even deeper into glow-in-the-dark research by touring the laboratories of the Joseph J. Zilber School of Public Health at UW-Milwaukee. Scientists will show how – and why – “tagging” genes in fish and worms with a green fluorescent protein can help keep you healthy. You can also see what’s so harmful about too much green algae in water.

This event is part of the Wisconsin Science Festival. In this, the 50th anniversary of UWM’s first doctoral degree program, we recognize the workhorse-scholars of our research laboratories. UWM doctoral students will present their “big ideas” in a variety of fields – in only 5 minutes, with 5 minutes of follow-up questions. From architecture to astrophysics, who knows what you’ll learn next?

This event is part of the Wisconsin Science Festival. Archaeological evidence for alcoholic beverages in prehistoric Europe exists – including drinking cups and cauldrons found in the graves. Learn how Iron Age people from what is now Germany produced pre-hopped beer and mead. Participate in a demonstration on the science of malting and fermentation to produce an ale based on evidence from a site dating to 540 B.C. while seeing the evidence for prehistoric brewing. Then taste samples of a beverage based on archaeological evidence for Iron Age braggot brewed by community partner Lakefront Brewery.

Our Enchanted Forest event features the best nightlife in Milwaukee! Kids and their grown-ups will enjoy a guided nighttime walk through Riverside Park and encounter costumed characters along the way. After the hike, come back inside the Center for games, crafts, and hot apple cider. Walks begin at 5:30 p.m. and leave about every 20 minutes. The last walk leaves at 7:20 p.m.

Theme: "Empower Her Periods" It is a fundraising event to support the girls of Bomet County in the Republic of Kenya so they may have sanitary pads during their monthly periods and be able to go to school. Studies have shown that a significant number of girls miss school during menstruations due to lack of sanitary pads. It is estimated that 10% to 20% of school days are lost every year, girls opt to stay home during their periods every month as a way of protecting themselves from humiliation and bullying that come from their colleagues when they have accidents.

This event is part of the Wisconsin Science Festival. Think of this program as “speed dating with research.” An all-star, interdisciplinary faculty cast will present a series of provocative big ideas that they research so non-scientists can understand the amazingness. But here’s the hitch: each speaker has only five minutes to tell you and just five minutes for follow-up questions before it’s on to the next hot topic. Don’t miss this night of knowledge nuggets – from black holes to green energy!

Find out more »Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra presents MYSO’s 2016 Playathon, presented by Olshan Outreach at Bayshore Town Center
Following an intensive five-week period of student fundraising, the 1,000 members of MYSO who make up three full orchestras, seven string orchestras, a wind ensemble, two flute choirs, a dozen jazz combos and two steel drum bands, will perform during this FREE event. This is the organization’s only annual event that features every MYSO ensemble.
