Magazine With their eloquent voices and expert musicianship, John Roberts and Debra Cowan bring to life songs seldom heard these days on TV or radio. Drawn from both the folk tradition and the work of contemporary songwriters, many of these songs tell of the timeless joys and sorrows of human experience. With concertina and banjo, John Roberts sings the traditional folksongs of his native Britain and Debra Cowen’s captivating warm alto carries each folk song she chooses with such emotion that you’ll forget that they were written by others.

What is memory? How do we define ourselves by our memories? This multi-media work reflects on the story of guest choreographer Daniel Burkholder’s grandmother – Sophia Saren. Filmed interviews about her childhood, marriage and her journey are interwoven with athletic dancing, monologues, diverse music and audience interactions that invite guests to consider how our own story will live on in history. Danceworks Performance Company will also present Stories From A Life at Dance Place, Washington D.C. March 25-26, 2017.
