Autumn has arrived and the leaves are falling. Milwaukee residents can rake leaves into the curbs starting today, Thursday, Oct. 1st. Dept. of Public Works crews will begin collecting the leaves on Monday, Oct. 12th.

Urban Design and Development in Another Gritty City: Glasgow, Scotland

This presentation will summarize the United Kingdom’s urban design agenda, the urban renaissance agenda and the development and design during the recent development boom, focusing on Glasgow. The audience will receive the background and context of Glasgow – both its longer history and the period when its fortunes began to turn around from the late 1970s through to the early 1990s, before focusing on the late 1990s/21st century period. Glasgow and Milwaukee have some interesting parallels, which might generate a group discussion about the comparison and contrast of the two cities. There will be time allowed for questions and answers. Speaker: Dr. Steven Tiesdell, a senior lecturer in public policy at the University of Glasgow Dr. Tiesdell holds a PhD in urban planning, obtained from the University of Nottingham. He is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and is also a Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute. He is the author of numerous publications and his research interests include urban design, urban development and regeneration, crime and safety, and public space. SARUP is the acronym for School of Architecture & Urban Planning lecture Series are Free and Open to the Public. All presentations will take place at the UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP) from 12:00 – 1:20 pm in Room 345. SARUP is located at 2131 E. Hartford Avenue, Milwaukee, WI.

The City Plan Commission (CPC) is the City’s official planning body established under State statute and is responsible for master planning activities. The CPC advises the Common Council on a variety of land development issues including zoning map changes, revisions in the zoning ordinance, subdivision approvals, business improvement districts, street and alley vacations, public land disposition and acquisition, new streets and the approval of development plans in certain overlay districts. Historic Preservation Commission Meeting

The Milwaukee Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) administers Milwaukee’s historic preservation ordinance, adopted in 1981, which provides certain kinds of legal protection for buildings or sites that have been declared historic by the Common Council. The HPC is responsible for designating historic landmarks and historic districts and for approving Certificates of Appropriateness (COAs) for permission to alter historic buildings. The HPC meets monthly on Mondays in City Hall, Room 301A, 200 E. Wells Street at 3:00 P.M. unless otherwise indicated. Agenda
