Immy’s African Cuisine Expanding From Its Kitchen To Yours
New product line augments East African restaurant's offerings.

Immy’s African Cuisine, one of Milwaukee’s only restaurants specializing in East African fare, is set to launch a line of freezer-friendly “take and bake” entrées — designed to bring the restaurant’s authentic African home-style dishes from their kitchen to yours.
Owner Immy Kaggwa said after “a year and some months” of working on the idea, “everything is ready to go” and will launch the offering before the Thanksgiving holiday season.
The feature dish of the take-and-bake line is egusi, a traditional stew made with crushed melon seeds, fresh ginger, garlic and other spices. It will be offered in chicken, beef and mushroom varieties. The mushroom option incorporates okra and collard greens. A navy bean stew and fried spinach dish are also set to launch.
“We are going to start small,” Kaggwa said. “But if customers want more options, we’ll go from there.”
Each take and bake package includes microwave, stovetop and oven heating instructions, as well as a spice level indicator. The navy bean stew, for example, is a “mild” spice level, while the beef egusi is “medium.”
The take and bake packages will be for sale exclusively at the restaurant, 2847 N. Oakland Ave. The price of each take and bake will be dependent on its weight, but Kaggwa offered a range of $7-$9 for the chicken egusi and $6-$7 for the lighter mushroom egusi.
Kaggwa opened Immy’s African Cuisine as a brick and mortar location in 2022, after operating a food truck under the same name for several years. Since then, the restaurant has garnered more than 500 Google reviews, with an average score of 4.6.
“We finally made it and it’s going well,” said Kaggwa. “We are thankful to our customers.”
