Carthage Establishes Biochemistry Degree Program
KENOSHA, Wis. – Students can now choose a major in biochemistry at Carthage College, leading to either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree.
This versatile new major provides excellent preparation for graduate programs and careers in pharmaceutical research, forensic science, genetic engineering, public health, and many other fields. Biochemistry also serves as a great starting point for students interested in becoming doctors, dentists, pharmacists, or physician assistants.
Early in their time at Carthage, biochemistry students can perform real-world research using professional-grade lab equipment. They learn to design experiments, interpret data, solve problems, and communicate scientific information.
Carthage’s location between Chicago and Milwaukee also puts valuable internships within reach so graduates can enter their fields with hands-on experience and confidence. The region has a growing biomedical hub, in particular, as major employers like Lilly (makers of Zepbound, Mounjaro, and Verzenio) and AbbVie (makers of Skyrizi and Vraylar) continue to increase their footprint.
“Biochemistry opens doors to some of today’s most rapidly growing fields, from healthcare to drug discovery,” says Professor John Kirk, chair of the Chemistry Department. “At Carthage, students don’t learn this science in a crowd. They work side-by-side with faculty in the lab, getting the personalized mentorship and real-world experience needed to stand out to top graduate programs and employers.”
