Shuttered Grocery Store Sold To Prominent Business Owner
Sale comes as plans emerged to open a new store.

A former Aldi grocery store on Milwaukee’s northwest side has a new owner as plans remain pending to restore a full-service grocery store to the property.
Aldi Inc. sold the property at 5301 N. Hopkins St. for $1.05 million to a limited liability company controlled by Anup ‘Andy’ Khullar, according to state real estate records posted Aug. 25.
Khullar owns several Milwaukee area gas stations and convenience stores, often under the “Andy’s” name.
The sale comes a little more than a month after Urban Milwaukee reported that Gurdev Singh, co-owner of Galst Food Market, was pursuing plans to open Hopkins Grocery in the vacant building.
Singh submitted license and occupancy permit applications in July for a full-service grocery store selling fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, dairy and frozen foods. The proposed business would also sell cigarettes, tobacco products and liquor.
An opening was targeted for September, according to the application.
The Aldi store closed Jan. 11 after operating for approximately two decades at the site. The chain said the closure was part of “a strategic effort to better allocate resources.”
The closure drew concern from area Alderwoman Andrea Pratt, who said at the time that losing the store would make groceries and other necessities harder to obtain, particularly for residents without vehicles.
Aldi’s departure also came amid a string of grocery and pharmacy closures that have disproportionately affected Milwaukee’s North and Northwest sides.
City officials have responded with several efforts aimed at preserving and expanding food access, including a grant program and legislation declaring “food apartheid” a public health and economic emergency.
Khullar, meanwhile, is already involved in the redevelopment of another former large-format retailer in northwest Milwaukee.
An ownership group involving Khullar acquired the former Walmart property at 10330 W. Silver Spring Dr. in 2025. Plans for that 17-acre property call for a mixed-use redevelopment that includes Restaurant Depot, an indoor adventure park and potentially a grocery store, gas station and apartments.
The Hopkins Street property, built in 2006, occupies approximately 2.7 acres in the Old North Milwaukee neighborhood.
Singh’s license application remains subject to city approval.
