Board Approves Bielinski Transparency Measures for Traffic Enforcement, Vehicle Impoundments
MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors today approved a resolution requesting quarterly reports from the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) on traffic stops, vehicle impoundments, stolen vehicle recoveries, and related incidents to strengthen transparency, accountability, and public trust in the implementation of County public safety policies.
The resolution, authored by Supervisor Justin Bielinski, establishes a framework for regular reporting beginning with the January 2027 committee cycle. The reports will provide policymakers and the public with information needed to evaluate traffic enforcement trends, monitor the impact of Milwaukee County’s vehicle impoundment authority, and inform future policy decisions.
“Milwaukee County has a responsibility to protect residents from reckless driving while also ensuring that every policy we implement reflects our values,” said Supervisor Bielinski. “If we are going to use tools like vehicle impoundment, we need to make sure they are being applied fairly, consistently, and without racial bias. Transparency and data are essential to maintaining public trust and ensuring our approach to public safety is both effective and equitable.”
The resolution requests that quarterly reports include available data on traffic stops, including reasons for stops and demographic information; incidents involving drivers fleeing from traffic stops; vehicle impoundments and reasons for impoundment; stolen vehicle recoveries; vehicle releases and auctions; and accident and injury data connected to traffic-related incidents.
“At a time when communities across the country are having important conversations about public safety, Milwaukee County is committed to doing the work of building trust,” said Supervisor Bielinski. “Public safety and accountability are not competing goals.”
The reporting request follows Milwaukee County’s adoption of an ordinance authorizing the impoundment of vehicles involved in certain reckless driving offenses under Wisconsin Statute §349.115. The quarterly reporting framework will help ensure the County can measure outcomes, identify trends, and evaluate whether the policy is achieving its intended goals.
