Supervisor Felesia A. Martin Reaffirms Commitment to Protecting Election Workers and Defending Public Confidence in Elections
MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors‘ Committee on Judiciary, Law Enforcement and General Services unanimously recommended adoption of a resolution, authored by Supervisor Anne O’Connor and cosponsored by Supervisors Steven Shea, Kathleen Vincent, Caroline Gómez-Tom, Felesia A. Martin, Shawn Rolland, Juan Miguel Martinez, Justin Bielinski, Leevan Roundtree Jr., Sky Z. Capriolo and Willie Johnson, Jr. affirming Milwaukee County’s commitment to secure, accurate, accessible, and transparent elections while expressing support for election workers and opposing intimidation directed at election officials and voters.
The resolution reaffirms the County Board’s support for the public servants who administer elections and calls for any legitimate law enforcement inquiries to be conducted through appropriate official channels.
“As someone who has spent years organizing in our community and encouraging civic participation, I know that our democracy is strongest when every eligible voter feels confident that their voice will be heard,” said Supervisor Martin. “The dedicated election officials, municipal clerks, poll workers, and volunteers who administer our elections deserve our gratitude, not harassment or intimidation. They are public servants carrying out their duties with professionalism and integrity.”
Martin, a longtime community advocate and former community organizer, said protecting public confidence in elections requires supporting both voters and the people responsible for administering elections fairly and transparently.
“The integrity of our elections depends not only on secure processes, but on ensuring that the people who administer them can do their jobs free from threats, political pressure, or intimidation,” Martin said. “Wisconsin’s 2020 election results have been reviewed, audited, recounted, and upheld through the courts. We should be focused on encouraging participation in future elections, not revisiting settled results in ways that undermine public trust.”
The resolution follows reports that representatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation sought to question the Milwaukee County Elections Director regarding the 2020 presidential election by visiting her private residence rather than contacting the Milwaukee County Election Commission through official channels.
In addition to supporting election workers, the resolution encourages eligible Milwaukee County residents to verify their voter registration, explore their voting options, and participate confidently in upcoming elections.
“Voting is one of our most fundamental rights,” Martin said. “Every eligible voter should have confidence that Milwaukee County’s elections are secure, transparent, and accessible.”
The full Board of Supervisors is expected to consider the resolution at its July meeting.
