Mayor Johnson Celebrates Wisconsin Bike Week With Annual Community Bike Ride Highlighting Connectivity of the City’s Bike Infrastructure and Traffic Calming Improvements

By - May 29th, 2026 01:29 pm

Mayor Cavalier Johnson invites community members to join him for his annual bike ride on Monday, June 1 at 10 a.m. at Zeidler Union Square Park, 301 w. Michigan Street. This event is part of Wisconsin Bike Week, which runs from May 31 through June 7, a statewide celebration of biking organized by the Wisconsin Bike Fed and recognized in communities throughout the state.

This year’s ride will take participants throughout downtown Milwaukee, highlighting traffic calming projects and different types of bike infrastructure along Kilbourn Avenue, Van Buren Street, Wells Street, and Michigan Street. These improvements are part of the city’s ongoing work to make streets safer and more accessible for all users.

All of these bike lanes are part of a citywide all ages and abilities bikeway network, connecting residents across the city to jobs, schools, parks, libraries, local businesses, festivals, and more.

Mayor Johnson and other city officials will be joined by The Department of Public Works (DPW), Wisconsin Bike Fed, Bublr Bikes, and other community partners for an approximately three-mile bike ride that starts and ends at Zeidler Union Square Park.

The Mayor’s Bike Ride emphasizes the benefits of bicycling for transportation, recreation, public health and the environment, while encouraging community connection. It encourages residents to explore Milwaukee’s growing bikeway network, engage with their neighborhoods, and experience the city from the seat of their bicycle.

Participants bringing their own bikes should arrive early if they haven’t ridden in a while. Wheel and Sprocket will be at Zeidler Union Square Park prior to the ride to help with any simple, quick fixes, such as oiling chains, pumping up tires, and fixing flats. Participants without their own bikes can rent one from the Bublr Bikes station at Zeidler Union Square Park.

This year’s Wisconsin Bike Week theme is “Bikes Build Community,” highlighting how cycling connects neighbors, supports local businesses, improves public health, and creates stronger, more vibrant communities throughout Wisconsin.
