MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin’s state-chartered banks reported sound financial performance through the first quarter of 2026, according to data released today by the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions (DFI). As of March 31, 2026, there were 115 state-chartered commercial banks serving Wisconsin residents.

Total assets for Wisconsin’s state-chartered banks stood at $74.5 billion through March 31, 2026, up from $70.8 billion reported on March 31, 2025. The net interest margin improved to 3.70% compared to 3.38% in March 2025. Net loans increased by 5.81% to $54.2 billion, up by $2.98 billion over the same time.

In the 12 months ending on March 31, 2026:

  • The capital ratio strengthened to 10.67%, an increase from 10.20% in March 2025;
  • The past due ratio rose to 1.07% from 0.97% in March 2025;
  • Net operating income improved to $238.3 million compared to $185.0 million in March 2025;
  • The return on average assets ratio expanded to 1.27% from 1.05% in March 2025; and
  • Bank liquidity remained stable, with only a slight increase in the loans to assets ratio to 72.79% compared to 72.39% in March 2025.

“Through the first quarter, the earnings and capital positions of Wisconsin’s state-chartered banks continue to strengthen, which helps protect against rising past due levels and potential future credit risk,” said DFI Division of Banking Administrator Kim Swissdorf. “Ongoing financial strength and stability within the state’s banking industry provides support and consistency for Wisconsin’s communities and businesses.”
