Discover the Jackson Park Forest Storybook Hike – Explore the Story in the Understory
Discover the Jackson Park forest storybook hike; explore the story in the understory
Hidden in plain sight, you’ll find a storybook in Jackson Park Forest. Starting at the playground, If you Give a Pig a Pancake by Laura Numeroff unfolds in 15 storyboards planted along a winding path. Adults will smile at the silly plot; beginning readers will delight in it; and younger children will like having the story read to them.
The trees sprouted up a century ago; this is surely the first time they have sheltered a storybook. The walk is short, the path is soft, the illustrations are clever. In the cool of the forest canopy, a watchful hiker will behold beauty all around, including native Solomon’s seal, fleabane, may apples, and wild geranium.Closest parking is near the new pickleball courts at 43rd and Cleveland Avenue; the playground and storybook path lie just beyond, with a porta potty handy. Friends of Jackson and Manitoba Parks are grateful to County Grounds for gifting the idea and the storyboards. The project will continue with different storybooks throughout the summer.
