WMSE and Sprecher Present SMASH Ale
A single hop and single malt ale developed my WMSE DJ Andrew Walther.
WMSE prides itself on being a trend setter. It was the first to launch a coffee with Anodyne, launch a 7” with local artist Field Report, and now it’s launching a summer time brew. Developed by WMSE DJ Drew Walther, the single hop, single malt beer (both roasted and grown locally in Wisconsin) was inspired by the station’s guitar smasher logo.
Walther hosts the weekly Poundcake Punk show on WMSE and also teaches part-time at his alma mater, MSOE. He is a noted home brewer and beer enthusiast. He developed the recipe for WMSE’s SMASH Ale after visiting a brewery in North Carolina and trying its Comet Smash – a single malt and single hop beer made with comet hops. According to Walther, “The history almost wrote itself on this one. It was the “SMASH” beer and the station was looking for a simple beer. This was very simple, and you could make it anything you wanted. I knew it was going to be a really good light, summer beer. The guitar smasher and SMASH Ale really go hand-in-hand.”
This is a limited edition beer, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the station. WMSE will host “Get Happy with WMSE” events throughout the summer. Please check wmse.org/smash for a schedule of events and a list of fine establishments carrying SMASH on tap.
