Giant Public Sculpture Coming to Mount Pleasant

Existing Hotel Room Tax to Fund Troll by Danish Recycle Artist Thomas Dambo

MOUNT PLEASANT, WI – World-renowned artist Thomas Dambo will create one of his landmark troll sculptures for the Village of Mount Pleasant, with installation planned for the second half of 2027. Dambo’s wooden trolls stand about 20 feet tall, and collectively attract over 4 million people a year in 20 different countries. Enjoy Mount Pleasant in April approved a contract with the artist to create a troll that will appear in Mount Pleasant in the second half of 2027.

“This troll will welcome thousands of people to visit and experience Mount Pleasant,” said David DeGroot, Mount Pleasant Village President. “Those visitors will support our local businesses, explore our parks, and discover everything that makes this community special.”

Dambo’s first Wisconsin sculpture is Mama Rosa in the City of Wauwatosa. Mama Rosa appeared in May 2025, and within one month had attracted over 62,000 visitors and $4 million in economic impact. The Mount Pleasant sculpture will be funded by an existing tax that is collected on hotel room rentals in the Village. The room tax has been in effect in Mount Pleasant for over 30 years to finance tourism projects and marketing. The Mount Pleasant Tourism Commission has approved room tax funds to finance the troll project.

A location for the troll has not yet been selected, though multiple parks and public spaces are under consideration. Dambo and his team will visit Mount Pleasant later this year to tour possible sites. Dambo’s artwork encourages people to explore and connect with nature, and to recycle products instead of throwing them away. He is a global leader in using recycled materials to create public art. More information about Dambo’s work and photos of his sculptures can be found on his studio’s website.

Enjoy Mount Pleasant welcomes support from across Racine County to bring the troll to life. It is seeking recycled wood and other materials that could be used to build the troll, and will seek local volunteers to help assemble the structure in 2027.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that people won’t want to miss,” said Matt Prochaska, Mount Pleasant Tourism Manager. “Volunteer to help us create a new treasure for Racine County and keep trash out of our landfills by recycling.”

Those interested in donating materials or volunteering to help build the troll next year can contact the Village at TrollHelpers@mtpleasantwi.gov. More details, including volunteer opportunities and material donation guidelines, will be shared on the Enjoy Mount Pleasant website as the project moves forward.
