Statement on Approval of Resolution Prohibiting the Use of City Property for Civil Immigration Enforcement Activities
Alderman Alex Brower March 27, 2026
I am pleased and proud that on Tuesday (March 24), in a strong vote of support for the rule of law and civil rights, the Common Council approved file number 251634 – a resolution prohibiting the use of City property for civil immigration enforcement activities.
This resolution is part of our ICE Out legislative package, and prohibits the use of City owned or controlled properties for civil immigration enforcement actions. As we have seen U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents deployed to other cities in surge actions – including in Chicago and Minneapolis – use playgrounds, parking lots, vacant lots, public buildings, parks and other public spaces for staging and operations as they carry out brutal, often illegal and aggressive enforcement actions, we just voted to keep those spaces off limits to ICE and reserved solely for Milwaukee residents.
Milwaukee is committed to the principle that all people in the city can live with respect, safety, and dignity, and is home to a rich and diverse population whose residents, regardless of national origin or language, contribute to the City’s economic strength, cultural vibrancy, and civic life. Immigrants and their families have helped build and sustain Milwaukee’s economy, schools and neighborhoods, making essential contributions to business, public service, and community life.
Using City-owned properties for civil immigration enforcement can make residents fearful and discourage them from accessing essential services, and the unauthorized use of City resources, property, or personnel to facilitate civil immigration enforcement actions interferes with the City’s authority over, and its use of, its own resources, property, and personnel. On Tuesday we simply said NO – not here!
