Golden Eagles snap three-game skid with 100th win in program history and head coach Meredith Black's career.
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Marquette University women’s lacrosse team (4-3, 0-0 BIG EAST) made history Friday afternoon, earning their 100th victory in program history in a 19-9 win over Youngstown State (0-6, 0-0 MAC) on the road. Head coach Meredith Black, in her 14th season at the helm and MU’s only head coach in team history, also earned her 100th career win.
The Golden Eagles were led by senior Tess Osburn, who scored five of her first six goals in the first half, outscoring YSU on her own in the opening half. Riley Jenkins would score her second hat trick of the season with three goals, while Hanna Bodner (2G), Dani Serrano (2G, 5A), Eileen Dooley (2G, 1A), and Sarah Beth Burns (2G, 1A) scored multiple on the day for MU. Ella Mautz (1G, 2A) and Julia Evens (1G) would round the scoring out for Marquette.
The MU defense stood strong as well, causing 12 turnovers and picking up a season-high 25 ground balls, while Jillian Howell and Mikayla Yang combined for five saves.
MU started the day with the opening three goals, finding the back of the net from Osburn, Riley Jenkins, and Serrano. After the Penguins got their first score, Osburn would find her second and Bodner would tally two-straight to make it 6-1. Osburn would find her third of the day to extend the lead, but YSU responded with two-straight to shorten the deficit.
After a Serrano score ended the first quarter, Osburn would find her fifth to make it 9-3 early in the second period. The Penguins would find their only goal of the period with 10 to go in the first half, and MU would respond with another from Osburn and a pair of scores from Burns in less than a minute to extend the lead, 12-4, heading into the break.
Ella Mautz and Julia Evens would find the back of the net to open the scoring in the second half, but the Penguins would respond with a pair to move the score to 14-6. Eileen Dooley would find a goal to get another goal for Marquette, and Adrianna Commodari would get her second assist on a Jenkins goal to put MU back up, 16-6, heading into the fourth.
