Baldwin Votes to Halt War in Iran
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) voted to stop President Donald Trump’s illegal war with Iran that has already led to the death of six U.S. servicemembers and is costing taxpayers billions. The War Powers Resolution, which would prevent further military action in Iran unless it is explicitly authorized by Congress, was defeated in the Senate.
“Today, my Republican colleagues handed over the keys to President Trump to allow him to drive us further into this war in Iran, without any say from the American people,” said Senator Baldwin. “President Trump started a war of choice without a clear explanation, goal, or exit strategy, potentially locking us into another yearslong conflict just like Iraq and Afghanistan. I will not support another forever war in the Middle East and will continue to stand up to this President before more Americans are killed in this unnecessary war. The American people have been clear: they want President Trump focused on lowering their costs, not starting forever wars in the Middle East that will cost Americans their lives and taxpayers billions of dollars.”Immediately following Saturday’s initial strikes on Iran, Senator Baldwin released a statement condemning this unauthorized military action and demanding that President Trump come to Congress before launching the United States into another potentially open-ended war. On Monday, Senator Baldwin took to the Senate floor in support of today’s War Powers Resolution to rein in this President. Senator Baldwin also co-sponsors the No War Against Iran Act to prohibit the use of federal funds for any use of military force in or against Iran without specific Congressional authorization.
