Zamarripa Condemns Steil-Backed “SAVE Act” As Direct Attack on Wisconsin Voters
MILWAUKEE — Alderperson and Secretary of State candidate JoCasta Zamarripa issued a statement today warning that Congressman Bryan Steil’s new voting bill — modeled on the federal “SAVE Act” — would strip countless eligible Wisconsinites of their right to vote while doing nothing to improve election security.
Nonpartisan research shows the proposal would block millions of lawful voters nationwide by requiring passport-level identification that many citizens do not have. Experts warn these barriers would fall hardest on naturalized Latino voters, young people, rural residents, and low-income Wisconsinites.
Zamarripa emphasized that this is part of a coordinated national effort.
“Bryan Steil’s bill fits neatly into Donald Trump’s plan to question results he doesn’t like,” she said. “If you make voting harder and undermine trust at the same time, you can create the chaos needed to challenge any election outcome.”
While Wisconsin’s Secretary of State does not administer elections, the office carries a powerful platform — and Zamarripa pledged to use it.
“Wisconsinites remember what it looked like when our elections were attacked,” she said. “We need leaders who will call out efforts to silence voters, not help push them.”
