James Jr. Earns Second-Straight Big East Freshman of the Week Honor

NEW YORK – Budd Clark of Seton Hall and Nigel James Jr. from Marquette have earned BIG EAST Weekly Honors.  Clark averaged 21.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 3.0 steals in a pair of victories for the Pirates.  James Jr. posted 18.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 2.5 steals in a 1-1 week for the Golden Eagles.

Clark was outstanding for Seton Hall this past week, averaging 21.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 3.0 steals in two comeback victories for the Pirates.  The 5-10 guard made 50.0% (16-32) of his field goal attempts.  Against Xavier on Jan. 28, the junior scored a season-high 24 points – 17 coming during SHU’s second half run – to go with seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals; one of the most complete stat lines by a Pirate in 15 years.  Last time out against Marquette, Clark had 19 points, six assists, three rebounds, and two steals.  In 71 minutes over the week, he committed only two turnovers while posting 10 assists.

James captured his second consecutive BIG EAST Freshman of the Week award after averaging 18.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 2.5 steals in a 1-1 week for the Golden Eagles. He connected on nearly 54% of his shot attempts (14-26), including 3-of-5 from the perimeter.  In a home win over Creighton on Jan. 27, James posted a full stat line, scoring a game-high 21 points and tying his season-best with eight assists while also notching five rebounds and three steals.  At Seton Hall on Jan. 31, the 6-0 guard finished with 16 points, six boards, three assists, and two steals.

BIG EAST Honor Roll
Silas Demary Jr, UConn, G, Jr. 
Demary Jr. shined in UConn’s two wins this week, averaging 15.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.5 assists, while shooting nearly 53% from the floor (9-17 FG).  On Jan. 27 versus Providence, he had 15 points, four rebounds, six assists, and a steal.  Last time out at Creighton, he shot 6-of-11 from the floor (3-4 3FG) – good for 15 points to go with six boards and five assists.

Malik Mack, Georgetown, G, Jr.
Mack shined in Georgetown’s 2-0 week, averaging 15.0 points and 6.5 assists while posting a 6.5:1 assist/turnover ratio.  Against DePaul on Jan. 28, Mack finished with 16 points, seven assists, and two rebounds, going 10-for-10 from the free throw line.  On Jan. 31, Mack tallied 14 points and six assists in the win at Butler.

Dillon Mitchell, St. John’s, F, Sr.
Mitchell tallied his fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 14 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, and three blocks for St. John’s in a win over Butler on Jan. 28.  Five of his 13 boards came on the offensive glass.  Mitchell has logged double-doubles in three of his last four outings for the Red Storm.

Devin Askew, Villanova, G, Gr.
Askew led Villanova with 20 points in its lone game of the week – a home win over Providence on Jan. 30.  The 6-5 guard connected on 6-of-9 shots from the floor – including five 3-pointers.  He added two rebounds, three assists, and two blocks in 24 minutes off the bench for the Wildcats.

Tre Carroll, Xavier, F, Gr.
Carroll averaged 21.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals, and 2.0 blocks in a 1-1 week for the Musketeers.  The 6-8 forward had 22 points and five rebounds at Seton Hall on Jan. 28 and scored a game-high 21 points to go with six boards, two assists and two blocks in the buzzer-beating win over DePaul on Jan. 31.
