WBB Downs Butler at Hinkle, 64-60

Building a 14-point lead at after three quarters, Marquette held on for a 64-60 win over Butler on Sunday afternoon at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Hampered by an injury during the past week, Halle Vice broke out for 23 points on on 10-of-15 shooting. Jaidynn Mason added 16 points with 14 of those coming in the second half.

A pair of early triples form Lee Volker gave Marquette 10-6 advantage midway through the first. Abbey Cracknell closed out the opening quarter with her first points of the season on a 3 from the wing to put the Golden Eagles up 13-10.

Three straight 3-pointers from Lily Zeinstra opened the second and forced a timeout from MU trailing 19-13. The pause helped settle Marquette down and the Golden Eagles took over at both ends during the final seven-plus minutes of the half. Butler was held scoreless the remainder of the period while Halle Vice caught fire and poured in12 points during a 19-0 run. Kenndi Perkins dropped in Marquette’s sixth 3-pointer of the half (6-of-9) in the final seconds to put MU up 32-19.

The Bulldogs began to chip away in the third through a 6-0 spurt after the eight-minute mark. With MU’s lead down to seven at the media timeout, Jaidynn Mason produced a pair of runouts in transition, the second after telegraphing pass.

After Marquette led 47-33 after three, Butler scored on its first five possessions of fourth to trim Marquette’s lead down to eight.

The Bulldogs then got within six. A the other end, with the shot clock was winding down on MU, Bridget Utberg saw an opening and slipped past her defender for an open layup. Butler answered but Marquette went inside to Charia Smith to go back up six. Mason then added two more at the line on the next possession to put MU up 59-51 with 2:09 remaining. A triple pulled Butler back within three but it was as close as the Bulldogs would get.

UP NEXT
Marquette returns home to host DePaul on Wednesday evening. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT at the Al McGuire Center and will stream on ESPN+.

Marquette won its 21st game in the last 24 against Butler.
MU won its second straight game scoring below 67 points after going 1-6 in the previous such games.
MU shot at least 50% from the field for the eighth time this season, finishing 26-of-51 for 51.0%.
MU shot 50% from 3 (6-of-12), its best percentage from deep since Jan. 4.
Finishing with 23 points, Halle Vice posted her sixth 20-point game of the season and her first since Jan. 4.
Jaidynn Mason’s 16 points were her most since Jan. 4. The senior shot 6-of-12 from the field and dished out four assists.
Fourteen of Mason’s points came in the second half.
