#MUBB Falters Against Seton Hall

MILWAUKEE – Leading by seven with 3:25 to play, Marquette was outscored 13-0 to end the game, falling to Seton Hall 79-73 on Tuesday night at Fiserv Forum. Despite going 8-of-8 from the free-throw line during the final seven minutes, the Golden Eagles missed their final 10 field goal attempts of the game.

MU got a game-high, and new career-high, 19 points from Ben Gold off the bench.

Marquette started slow, missing on its first six attempts from the field. Trailing by as much as eight with just under seven minutes gone after starting 2-of-12, Marquette began to find its footing with Nigel James Jr., Ben Gold and Royce Parham doing the heavy lifting. The three combined to score 14 points during 17-4 run as the Golden Eagles took a 25-20 lead with 8:22 on the clock. The four-plus minute stretch saw MU going 7-of-9 from the field.

Following a 3-pointer from Adam Clark that cut Pirates’ deficit to two, James Jr. and Seton Hall’s A.J. Staton-McCrary combined to knock down five 3’s in a three-minute span. Staton-McCray’s second and third gave the visitors a one-point lead.

The run of six straight 3-pointers was ended on layup from Gold with 3:27 to go in the half. It started a 7-3 stretch for the Golden Eagles as they led 38-35 with under 90 seconds on the clock. But four points from Seton Hall, including a pair of free throws with 1.4 on the clock gave the Pirates a one-point edge at the half.

Seton Hall extended its lead to six two-and-half minutes into the second half, but Marquette responded with 16 unanswered. The Pirates were forced to call a timeout with 12:45 on the clock and the Golden Eagles’ lead standing at 55-45.

A corner 3 from Trey Parker ended Seton Hall’s drought that lasted more than five minutes. It started a 5-0 spurt but MU answered with five of its own as the lead stood at 10 following a Parham triple 9:58 to go. But in just over a minute, the Golden Eagles’ advantage was all but gone through eight straight from the Pirates. Chase Ross ended the stretch with a transition bucket.

Marquette was able to rebuild its lead to as much seven through getting to the line as they went 8-of-8 during the final seven minutes. It wouldn’t be enough though as the Golden Eagles missed their final 10 shots of the game. Seton Hall finished the final 13 points of the night to win 79-73.
