MILWAUKEE – A two-point game at the half turned into a comfortable 71-55 win on Friday night at the Al McGuire Center as the Marquette outscored Bowling Green 42-28 during the final 20 minutes. MU shot a season-best 56.9% from the field during the game, and was blistering 64.0% during the second half.

Lee Volker led Marquette with 23 points and seven rebounds. Fifteen of the graduate’s points came after halftime.

Marquette jumped out early through Volker and its defense. The senior accounted for eight of MU’s 15 points in the opening 10 minutes while the defense held Bowling Green to just 17.6% shooting from the field. The Falcons got their shooting going to start the second with an 8-0 run in less than two minutes to their first lead of the game at 16-15.

The Golden Eagles found a mismatch in the second, working the ball inside to Halle Vice. The junior went 4-of-4 from the field in quarter, helping MU to a slim 29-27 advantage.

Jaidynn Mason got the Golden Eagles going out of the break. Following a triple from the top of the key, the senior produced a block at the other end that turned into a layup from Volker on the break. After the point guard found Vice for her 14th point that put MU up 36-31 with 7:14 on the clock, the Falcons called their first timeout.

Following the break, a stop was cashed in at the other end with a 3-pointer from Skylar Forbes. A steal from Mason then turned into a layup on the break by the senior to give Marquette its first double-digit lead of the night at 49-39 with 90 seconds remaining in the third.

A Paige Kohler 3 opened the fourth for the Falcons, but Marquette answered, putting the game out of reach with a 14-1 run.
