The Milwaukee Common Council today expressed its deep gratitude to Governor Tony Evers and his administration for immediately acting to ensure the release of full November FoodShare (SNAP) benefits, providing crucial relief to nearly 700,000 Wisconsinites, including tens of thousands of vulnerable Milwaukee residents.
This week has brought immense stress and uncertainty to our most vulnerable residents. We commend Governor Evers for his decisive leadership in fighting for the court-mandated release of these funds and acting without delay. His swift response ensures that our neighbors – who are our children, seniors, and working families in Milwaukee – will not have to face the weekend with empty cupboards.
The Council’s action follows its recent joint statement, “A call to action: Safeguarding our children’s futures from hunger’s devastating grasp,” where members urged state and federal leaders to recognize the urgency of the situation.
When children and families cannot put food on the table, it is a moral failure. Access to food is a fundamental human right, not a political bargaining chip, and it should never have been jeopardized in the first place. Governor Evers understood the gravity of the situation and stepped up when the federal government failed. We are incredibly grateful for his commitment to keeping our community fed.
