MADISON, WI – Today, members of the Wisconsin State Assembly gathered to honor first responders from across the state of Wisconsin with awards recognizing their public service and sacrifice. Representative Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) released the following statement:

“Today, first responders from across our state came together in the State Capitol to be recognized by their Representatives for their careers of service to their communities. It is my honor to present the First Responder of the Year Award for the 78th Assembly District to Madison Police Department Officer Lester Moore.

Officer Moore has served with the Madison Police Department for 26 years, working as a patrol and neighborhood officer in some of the highest-need areas of Madison, a member of the Crime Prevention Gang Unit, and now as a member of the Community Outreach and Resource Education (CORE) unit. He has worked in gang intelligence and enforcement for over 14 years, using his expertise to develop methods to address gang issues in Madison, provide training to law enforcement officers and community organizations throughout Wisconsin, and present on a national level as an expert on gang identification and investigation. Officer Moore has also served as the Vice President of the Midwest Gang Investigators Association’s Wisconsin Chapter.

As a public servant who has continuously prioritized relationship building as the cornerstone of his style of policing, Officer Moore has worked hard to establish rapport with residents of the communities he has served and strengthen relationships with organizations such as Mentoring Positives and the Dane County Neighborhood Intervention Program.

Additionally, Officer Moore was one of the early members of the Madison Police Department Unconscious Bias/Cultural Competency group, where he assisted in the development of training for officers on overcoming unconscious bias and developing connections with communities of color. Both on-duty and in his personal time, Officer Moore has devoted significant time and effort to working with Madison youth, particularly engaging them in conversations around social issues surrounding people of color and law enforcement.

Every day, Officer Lester Moore exemplifies what it means to be completely invested in the communities you serve. I want to thank him for his ongoing service with Madison Police Department and commend him on the incredible work he’s doing in our city.”
