Rep. Fitzgerald Statement on Democrats Forcing a Government Shutdown

By - Oct 1st, 2025 12:23 pm

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Scott Fitzgerald (WI-05) issued the following statement after Democrats rejected a clean short-term funding bill and forced a government shutdown.

“House Republicans passed a clean, straightforward funding bill to keep the government open through November 21, 2025. Our bill was simple, responsible, and gave the Congress time to finish the appropriations process without partisan games.

“Instead, Democrats walked away and demanded $1.5 trillion in new spending for a short-term continuing resolution, along with extreme provisions. Their plan would reinstate taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal aliens, giving benefits to those who broke our laws, while at the same time slashing $50 billion in investments in rural healthcare that families in Wisconsin depend on. That tells you everything you need to know about their priorities.

“For years, Democrats have banged the drum that shutdowns are unacceptable, but yesterday, Senate Democrats forced a shutdown to push their extreme, partisan priorities. Unlike my Democrat colleagues, I proudly voted to keep the government OPEN.”
