Milwaukee, WIGirls Rock MKE is proud to announce the award of a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts in support of two upcoming workshops in the “A Rebel Sound” series: Songwriting Workshop on Saturday, September 27th, and Studio Recording Workshop on Sunday, October 19th. These events are part of a three-workshop series in partnership with The New State and Washington Park Neighbors aimed at empowering youth ages 12 to 18 to explore music creation and production. This support comes after our first “A Rebel Sound” workshop, Live Sound & Event Production, which took place on August 20th at Washington Park Wednesday.

The Songwriting Workshop on September 27th from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Pathways High School will provide participants with hands-on experience in songwriting techniques, lyric writing, and the creative process. The Studio Recording Workshop on October 19th from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Tymeless Studios will give attendees the opportunity to explore the process of recording, mixing, and producing music in a professional studio setting. The workshop series will finish with a Showcase Reception on Sunday, November 2nd at a venue TBA.

The three-workshop series is designed to empower underrepresented groups by offering educational experiences in areas often overlooked by traditional arts programs. The grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board allows Girls Rock MKE to continue its mission of providing accessible, inclusive, and creative music education to individuals across diverse backgrounds, skill levels, and identities.

“We’re incredibly grateful to the Wisconsin Arts Board for supporting our mission and this important community programming,” says Mary Joy Hickey, Executive Director of Girls Rock MKE. “These workshops will not only teach participants technical skills, but will also provide them with a platform to express themselves wholly and openly.”

The workshops are open to all youth ages 12-18, regardless of prior musical experience, and registration is now open, with Girls Rock MKE and PEARLS for Teen Girls receiving priority registration.
