The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) awarded the WIS 54 improvement project in Outagamie County with a regional America’s Transportation Award in the category of ‘Best Use of Technology & Innovation, Small Project.’ Watch the AASHTO video announcing the WIS 54 project.

As an important route for local residents, commuters and regional traffic, the newly improved WIS 54 corridor through Seymour greatly enhances safety and reduces congestion. The innovative project began in April 2024 as a cost-effective solution that balanced safety needs within a constrained environment.

“Safety is a key part of our mission and it’s great when we can couple that with innovative engineering strategies,” WisDOT Secretary Kristina Boardman said. “This project exemplifies our efforts to make quality transportation investments across the state. We’re grateful to our dedicated teams and industry partners for their commitment to design, plan and complete these upgrades to keep Wisconsinites and visitors moving safely and efficiently.”

Two urban intersections on WIS 54 in Seymour were rebuilt with roundabouts to improve safety for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists. Within the city of Seymour, the new three-lane roadway with two-way left turn lane is expected to decrease serious crashes. In addition, crews resurfaced more than six miles of WIS 54 between French Road and Seminary Road, which now includes wider paved shoulders. The $6.1 million project was completed on time and on budget in mid-September 2024.

Sponsored by AASHTO, AAA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the America’s Transportation Awards competition recognizes projects and programs across the nation that make their communities better places to live, work and play.
