Residents Encouraged To Exercise Caution Amid Increase of Flood Related Scams
Those who filed a 2-1-1 report may receive unprompted offers for assistance
Alderman Peter Burgelis is encouraging residents to be aware and exercise caution as an increase of fraud attempts are on the rise disguised as flood relief.
“In recent weeks I’ve heard from residents about unprompted text messages and emails, as well as door-to-door contractors offering assistance for flood recovery,” said Alderman Burgelis. “Residents should exercise caution when it comes to unsolicited offers for home inspections, cleanup help or other forms of assistance. That said, any resident who completed a 2-1-1 report, either online or by phone, and indicated they need help, could have their information shared with organizations in partnership with Milwaukee County seeking to provide assistance. These can include organizations such as Crisis Cleanup and the Red Cross, among others.”
“If an unsolicited text or email seems fishy, you can contact the organization directly to verify the legitimacy of the message before providing personal information or other details. We want residents to receive the assistance and support they need in the aftermath of the floods, but also remain vigilant to protect themselves from further harm via scams,” Alderman Burgelis continued.
Residents that were impacted by the recent flooding, whether your basement took on water, your belongings were destroyed, or your business was damaged, are encouraged to take a few minutes to fill out the 2-1-1 Wisconsin Damage Report: https://211wisconsin.communityos.org/damage-report. Additionally, residents can visit county.milwaukee.gov/2025FloodResources for more information on available resources.
