MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers today released a statement regarding a new lawsuit against President Donald Trump and the Trump Administration to stop their efforts to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education. Gov. Evers, who’s spent most of his life fighting for Wisconsin’s kids and schools as a former teacher, principal, superintendent, and state superintendent before becoming governor, has been outspoken about how eliminating the U.S. Department of Education will hurt Wisconsin’s kids and schools since initial reports of the plan were reported last week.

Gov. Evers released the following statement:

“President Trump and Republicans want to eliminate the Department of Education, cut funding for public education, and sell out Wisconsin’s kids and our schools, all so they can help pay for tax breaks to rich millionaires and billionaires. Efforts to try and eliminate the Department of Education will hurt Wisconsin’s kids and our public schools, and that’s a non-starter for me.

“Doing what’s best for our kids is what’s best for our state, and this decision will be a disaster for our kids and their futures. Here in Wisconsin, where schools are already going to referendum every couple of years to keep their lights on and doors open due to years of attacks on our schools at the state level, gutting the Department of Education and funding for our public schools will make things even worse—it will make it harder to improve outcomes, class sizes will get even bigger, educators and staff could lose their jobs, and schools may be forced to close their doors for good.

“I will fight every effort by President Trump and his administration to mess with our schools, our kids, and their futures, especially when he doesn’t have the power to do what he’s trying to do, like trying to unilaterally obliterate an agency Congress created. I continue to urge Congressional Republicans to stand up to efforts to undermine our constitutional checks and balances and stop these reckless attacks on our kids, our schools, our communities, and our state.”
