While MMSD Project Advances, Local Businesses Need Community Support

In 2020, the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) completed a planning study to develop system improvements that would reduce wastewater levels in MMSD sewers on West Roosevelt Drive and eliminate a sanitary sewer overflow connection. Construction of the project remains ongoing through the end of the year.

7th District Alderman DiAndre Jackson encourages the community to continue to support local businesses such as Sherman Perk Coffee Shop during the continued disruption. “I want to thank residents and business owners for their patience during the year plus timeframe in which MMSD has been working on the West Roosevelt Sewer Project,” he said. “I know the long term construction can be bothersome, but when complete this update will mean enhanced quality of life for all those who live and work in the area. In the interim, businesses in the area such as Sherman Perk are still open and operating. Join me there this Saturday to discuss the project.”

Alderman Jackson will be hosting a pop-up in-district office hours this Saturday, March 8 beginning at 9 a.m. at Sherman Perk Coffee Shop, 4924 W. Roosevelt Dr. Those interested in discussing this issue, or any other, are encouraged to stop by to connect with the Alderman and support Sherman Perk.

The construction of new MMSD and City of Milwaukee sewers and manholes will reroute high wastewater flows to areas of the MMSD sewer system that have a greater capacity to handle excess wastewater. Additionally, the removal of a sanitary sewer overflow pump station at North 35th Street and West Roosevelt Drive will allow the construction of the MMSD’s West Basin Stormwater Management Project, which is the third and final component of an integrated system to address recurrent flooding in the 30th Street Corridor.
