New Exhibit Highlighting Denmark’s Resistance During the Holocaust Opens Feb. 14 at Jewish Museum Milwaukee
Choices of Consequence: Denmark and the Holocaust On View Through May 25
MILWAUKEE – January 28, 2025 – Jewish Museum Milwaukee is proud to announce its upcoming exhibit, Choices of Consequence: Denmark and the Holocaust, on view from February 14 to May 25. This compelling exhibit examines the extraordinary actions of the Danish people during World War II, who defied Nazi persecution to save roughly 95 percent of Danish Jews from the Holocaust. From the covert efforts to hide Jewish families to daring escapes by sea, the exhibit highlights the bravery and resilience of both rescuers and those they saved.
“During World War II, much of Europe was complicit in aiding the Nazis’ Final Solution, leaving Jewish populations with limited options for escape or survival,” explains Executive Director Daniel Schulman. “Amid widespread antisemitism and xenophobia, Denmark emerged as an exception, offering a model of how ordinary people can come together to stand against injustice.”
Choices of Consequence includes a range of personal narratives and historical artifacts that bring this remarkable story to life while exploring unique circumstances and events surrounding Germany’s occupation of Denmark. The exhibit features the series ‘Resistance and Rescue: Denmark’s Response to the Holocaust by Judy Glickman Lauder’ borrowed from The Florida Holocaust Museum. Created in the early 1990’s, poignant images of Danes who rescued Jews and of Jewish individuals saved are captured by the internationally recognized photographer, conveying the profound power of moral courage in confronting hate and atrocities.
“This exhibit tells the story of true allyship, of defying tyranny, and the power of human instinct to do the right thing, even in the face of extraordinary risk,” said Molly Dubin, Chief Curator at Jewish Museum Milwaukee. “It’s a potent reminder that the actions of individuals, when unified with courage and determination, can make an incredible difference.”
An opening preview will be held on the evening of February 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. Additional programming related to the themes of Choices of Consequence: Denmark and the Holocaust will be held throughout the duration of the exhibit.
Educational programming in partnership with the Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Resource Center.
